Keep out or else! 5 iconic teenage bedrooms on screen
Ah, the teenage years – the angst, the drama, the bad poetry. And there’s no other refuge more sacred to an adolescent than their bedroom - the space which often bears painful witness to many long phone calls and failed attempts at playing the guitar. Hollywood set design has over the years paid considerable tribute to this tender and formative age – as top providers of some of the most stylish and functional bedroom furniture Malta has to offer, the team at Carmelo Delia shares their pick of the most iconic teenage bedrooms in movies.
1. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Every 90s teen dreamed of having Kim’s waterbed (minus the scissor punctures courtesy of the film’s titular character, obviously). The blonde cheerleader’s bedroom also reflected the home decor of the rest of the Boggs family home, showcasing a 50’s suburban style offset with a more modern, 90s twist.
2. Lady Bird (2017)
The wonderfully-nostalgic bedroom decor of Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson was designed to mirror the turn of the millennium, as well as Lady Bird’s strong-willed, colourful personality. The bedroom was created entirely from scratch, with a pastel pink colour palette, album covers adorning the walls and a messy, layered look that was created using stickers, beads hanging from lamps and even little plastic spiders stuck to random surfaces.
3. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Just like their Shakespearean counterparts, the Stratford sisters couldn’t have been more different in terms of personality – and their bedrooms were designed to reflect this. The rebellious, hot-headed Kat chose to plaster her walls with rock posters and leather jackets, whereas her more sweet-natured sibling was more partial to fluffy soft toys, flowers and shades of baby pink.
4. Mean Girls (2004)
From Regina’s giant, expensive chamber to Cady’s more modest space decorated with Indian and African fabrics, no bedrooms that were featured in Mean Girls were alike. Of course, Regina King’s was by far the showiest and over-the-top, with the queen-sized bed set on a raised platform and surrounded by curtains, finished with pink lace, satin cushions and fluffy carpets.
5. Ghost World (2001)
Being a teenage girl is hard, and nobody knew that better than Enid Coleslaw, Ghost World’s main protagonist and snarky, tormented teen. Enid’s fondness of the weird and obscure is made evident through her record collections of 1965 Indian Rock ‘n’ Roll, piles of bright, bohemian scarves and thrifted knick-knacks scattered everywhere.
