Saucepan swagger: The rise of the male cook in the kitchen

The tables seem to be turning as more and more men are taking up cooking - and not just as burger-flippers during summer BBQs. We’re referring to the rise in men becoming the lead - or at least, equal - cook in the household. As suppliers of quality Italian kitchens in Malta, we take a look at a few possible reasons for this phenomenon.

 1. The way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach

Along with salary, status, personality and appearance, cooking skills have become a sought-after factor in attracting women, which might have something to do with the rise in the number of men flaunting their knife skills. Enter ‘The Gastrosexual’- a new demographic which refers mainly to men who take the household chore aspect away from cooking and turn it into a hobby – sometimes to impress friends and charm prospective romantic partners. In fact, according to a study by food company PurAsia, 48% of people say being able to cook makes a person more attractive to them, and almost a fourth of 18-34-year old men say they use their culinary skills to potentially seduce a partner.

2. Male chefs are providing inspiration to get into the kitchen

Perhaps through the glorification of high-pressure - competitive cooking shows such as MasterChef and Hell's Kitchen, celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay have helped create the perception of cookery as a macho pursuit, which appeals to many men. Moreover, it seems that cooking for this new generation isn't simply a matter of refuelling; they are looking for something more satisfying than what they can find at the back of the kitchen cupboard in terms of taste, presentation and effort.

3. More women are spending less time at home

With more women having joined the workforce and thus spending less time to spend at home, this shift should come as no surprise. Furniture companies have picked up on this change and are increasing the number of male-targeted brands into the kitchen – a place which has become the modern tool shed – a place to retreat to, clear the mind, unleash creativity, and unwind.
